A practically perfect Valentine’s Day Chocolate Cake recipe
It’s really fun to cook a Chocolate Heart Cake and this cake recipe is practically perfect. I found it in the Better Homes & Gardens “New Cook Book”. The cake recipe called for putting sour cream in the cake batter and that sounded kind of weird. I gave it a try anyway. This is the secret ingredient in making this a rich and delish chocolate cake.
Strawberries and Chocolate are a perfect combination for Valentine’s Day
I added the sliced strawberries for another special ingredient in this cake recipe. Don’t you think that when you slice a strawberry it looks like a heart? I sure do! What goes together better than Strawberries & Chocolate for a delish Valentine’s Day cake recipe?
Sour Cream Chocolate Heart Cake Recipe Ingredients
1 3/4 Cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3 squares (3 ounces) unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled. I used bittersweet instead of unsweetened chocolate.
1/2 cup dairy sour cream
1 cup cold water
HOW THIS HEART CAKE RECIPE IS MADE
Grease and lightly flour two 8×1-1/2 inch or 9 x 1 1/2 round baking pans. If you are making the heart shape use one square and one round baking pan.
Stir together four, baking soda, and salt.
In a mixer bowl beat shortening on medium speed of electric mixer for about 30 seconds. Add sugar and vanilla and beat until well combined. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each egg.
Stir in cooled melted chocolate (use a double boiler to melt the chocolate so it doesn’t burn) and sour cream.
Add dry ingredients and cold water alternately to beaten mixture, beating on low speed after each addition until just combined.
Pour evenly into pans especially if you are going to make a one level cake.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until done. Cool 10 minutes on wire racks. Remove from pans. Cool and frost.
GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE CAKE RECIPE
After the cake is completely cooled you need to cut the round cake into two even halves. Place the square on a cake pan (or foil covered cookie sheet) and set it on the diamond. Place each round half at separate sides of the top of the diamond.
Place frosting (see recipe below) on the inside edges between the square and the round halves to help them stick together. Then, frost the entire cake.
Next, place the sliced strawberries around the outer edge of the cake to form the “heart” of this Sour Cream Chocolate Heart cake recipe.
CHOCOLATE FROSTING RECIPE AND INGREDIENTS
This chocolate frosting recipe is a practically perfect topping for the chocolate cake recipe above. I added one ingredient to make it extra special. See the ingredient list for my special ingredient!
1 1 pound box powdered (confectioners) sugar
1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, softened
3 to 4 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1/3 cup sour cream (this is a secret ingredient to make the frosting really rich and tasty)
Place the entire box of powdered sugar & cocoa powder in a mixing bowl, add the softened butter. Turn the mixer on low being careful because the powdered sugar is like a fine dust and it will poof out of the bowl if you turn the beaters on too high. Add in the milk and vanilla extract and mix until smooth. Then add the sour cream. If the consistency is too thin just add a little more powdered sugar. If it is too thick add a little extra milk.
