Red velvet cake is awesome.  It is just so pretty! I have been looking high and low for the perfect red velvet cake recipe. I like to make cake from scratch and love the light chocolate flavor of red velvet. Red velvet cake recipe makes the most perfect cupcakes and that is what I am making today. I spotted this amazing red velvet cake recipe on accident when my mom left out her Victoria magazine on the kitchen table. It just happened to be opened to page 94 of the Best of Bliss issue from February and March 2013. There it was, this perfect cake right there in front of my eyes. I had to make it.  I am so glad I did because these cup cakes are sooooooo good. They are so good, in fact, I just had to share them with you.

Red Velvet Cake Recipe Directions

  • 2 1/2 Cups all purpose flour, sifted. Red Velvet Cake Recipe
  • 2 Cups sugar
  • 1 Cup dutch process cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 Cups vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 Cups buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 (1 ounce) bottle of red food coloring

  1. Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees F
  2. Spray 3 8 inch round cake pans with nonstick spray such as PAM
  3. Flour cake pans lightly.
  4. Line each pan with a parchment round and spray again.

  6. In a large bowl sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. red velvet cake recipe
  7. Add eggs, oil, buttermilk, vinegar, vanilla and food coloring.
  8. Using an electric mixer at medium speed beat batter until smooth, about 2 minutes. Red Velvet Cupcake Recipe
  9. Evenly divide batter among the three prepared pans.
  10. Bake for 20 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted near the centers comes out clean. Red Velvet Recipe from Scratch
  11. Let cool for 10 minutes in pans.
  12. Remove cakes from the pans and let cool completely on wire racks.

Note: Do not frost the cake layers until completely cool.

  • 2 8 ounce packages cream cheese softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 Cups confectioners sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

In a large bowl using an electric mixer at medium speed beat cream cheese, butter, confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract until creamy. Frost your cooled cake. Enjoy some delicious red velvet cake or cupcakes.
